About Madonna Mission
Madonna Mission is a not-for-profit organization providing education and resettlement support programs for refugee families with a strong focus on women and elementary aged children. Madonna Mission was formed to provide a safe space in a compassionate and supportive environment for refugee community members to learn English. We empower through education, and our programs encompass families from 29 countries speaking over 24 languages.
In 2012, we opened our doors to provide important support programs for refugees and their families in Chicago. The individuals and families we serve are vetted by the State Department and are legally admitted to the U.S. from countries suffering from political and civil unrest, climate driven famine, violence, and poverty. Our students are grateful newcomers in an unfamiliar land, eager to build self-sufficient lives but lacking the day-to-day experience and language to navigate a foreign country. They all seek a path to productive citizenship. Refugee agencies offer some support, but that support ends within a few months, and they are expected to be self-reliant, often without family, friends or networks of support.
Madonna Mission offers a safe space where students can receive connections to resources and learn in a compassionate environment.
Programs include:
- English as Second Language (ESL): To help our refugee families overcome the language barrier that may impede success in building a new life in the United States.
- After School Program (ASP): Elementary age students receive literacy support, homework assistance, an afternoon snack, and the companionship of other refugee children their age. This support enables the children to improve their grades, build good work habits, enhance language literacy and boost their overall confidence.
- Learning in Action (LIA): This program is an engaging summer program for grade school students that combines academic lessons, physical fitness activities and field trips.
