The Ronald L. McDaniel Foundation was established in 1995 by Ronald L. McDaniel, an iconic figure in the railroad and supply community. McDaniel grew up in Richmond, IN and was best known as president of Western-Cullen-Hayes Inc.
The mission of the Ronald L. McDaniel Foundation is to support children by funding direct service programs. The primary interests of the Foundation include education, housing, medical, and basic needs enabling children to reach their optimal potential. The greater Chicago, IL metropolitan area and Richmond, IN are the two main geographic areas for grantmaking.
The Foundation board consists of seven individuals, including three family members.
Job Description
The Program Officer will join a team of two individuals. Along with the team, the Program Officer will be responsible for the oversight of a growing grant portfolio which will exceed $5m in distribution in the next two years. This individual will be involved in all aspects of proposal review including correspondence with applicants, site visits/meetings, funding recommendations to board of directors, review of progress reports, and evaluation of awarded grants. This is a full-time position (40 hours/week). Industry survey data is used to set a comparative salary range between $90,000 - $95,000 annually. The salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, peer and market data, business sector and geographic location. Comprehensive benefit package included. This position is remote/work from home; however the individual must be based in the Chicagoland area. This position will report to the Program Director.
Responsibilities:
• Manage full life cycle grantmaking including evaluation of potential grantees, recommendations to board, site visits and follow up.
• Work closely with the Program Director and Grant Manager in preparation for Foundation board meetings, grant tracking, reporting, database management and budget information
• Serve as spokesperson for the Foundation.
• Establish and maintain relationships and communications with nonprofit organizations, other grant makers, community leaders, and others as necessary to further the Foundation goals.
• Research and monitor issues and trends in the philanthropy as well as the Foundation’s focus areas.
Qualifications
• Experience in a multi-tasking, deadline-oriented environment
• Comfortable working autonomously with minimal direction
• A demonstrated ability to take initiative, prioritize work, manage time effectively, work independently, multi-task, and meet deadlines
• Strong organizational, judgement, and planning skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong ability to lead and facilitate meetings
• Ability to interact well and clearly with fellow staff members, board members, and community groups
• Ability to travel in the local grant making area (~30%) balancing time in the field with internal Foundation needs
• Adhere to the highest ethical standards and maintain professional discretion
• Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Outlook
• Knowledge of grantmaking software, Foundant preferred
• 3-5 years’ experience working with a foundation or other grantmaking organization
• Experience working with or for non-profits
